07/28/2008 - Süd-Chemie completes expansion of hydrotalcite production in Moosburg

Following one the of largest investments in the company‘s history, Süd-Chemie secures its leading position in the growing market for lead-free PVC stabilisers

Today, Süd-Chemie AG, Munich, a leading global manufacturer of catalysts and adsorbents, officially opened its expanded production plant for hydrotalcite, securing its leading position on the world´s growing hydrotalcite market. Hydrotalcites are ecologically harmless products used to replace lead and other heavy-metal-based stabilisers in the manufacture of PVC and other plastics.

Over the past twenty months, Süd-Chemie has invested around €20 million at the Moosburg site, tripling its hydrotalcite production capacity from 5,000 tons to 15,000 tons per year. Since 2000, Süd-Chemie has already created some twenty-five jobs in Moosburg in this innovative technological sector. Following completion of the production expansion, the number is now to be increased to over forty. Due to the additional rise in the demand for Süd-Chemie‘s hydrotalcite which is expected over the next few years, consideration is already being given to extending production capacities even further.

The official opening of the expanded production plant took place today at the Süd-Chemie works in Moosburg.

The products manufactured by Süd-Chemie in Moosburg under the brand names SORBACID® and HYCITE® are used as stabilisers for the plastic material PVC during processing (SORBACID®) and to stabilise the plastics polypropylene and polyethylene (HYCITE®). In these cases, they replace the environmentally-harmful stabilisers previously used which contain lead and heavy metal compounds.

In the wake of a voluntary agreement on the part of European PVC manufacturers to progressively reduce the use of lead for PVC processing and dispense entirely with heavy metals by the year 2015, the market for hydrotalcite is growing at a high speed. Süd-Chemie is the world‘s number two player in this market.

At today‘s opening ceremony, Dr. Hans Jürgen Wernicke, Deputy Chairman of Süd-Chemie AG, said: By expanding the hydrotalcite production plant, we are securing our leading position on the growing global market for heavy-metal-free plastics stabilisers. Süd-Chemie‘s commitment to this innovative hydrotalcite technology is not only a significant contribution to sustainable and environmentally-benign chemical products, but also an important declaration of belief in our long-established site in Moosburg.
